Manacare considers its mission as a handshake of peace and goodwill
Since its formation in 1994 the Manacare Foundation has provided help and support to those most in need across the world. Manacare occasionally responds to emergencies such as tsunamis and war, however we primarily set up long term self-sustaining autonomous projects. The organisation, formed by Joy Butler Markham in 1994, continues to address the needs of those individuals most neglected by society, such as children, the elderly and the physically challenged. “We aim to make all our projects self sustaining and autonomous. Manacare is totally committed to transparency and we can guarantee that none of our managerial staff or trustees take a salary or have a company car. All our proceeds are used to directly support our projects- what you see at Manacare is what you get!”
Our projects include:
• Providing shoes for children in Siberia
• Setting up a physiotherapy centre in the East and West Bank in Egypt
• Feeding street orphans in Sierra Leone
• Providing food and clothing to under privileged children in Chile
• Educating under privileged children in the Philippines
• Providing clean water in Uganda
• Providing clothing and shoes to under privileged rural children in China
• Setting up an orphanage in Lithuania
• Providing food and clothing to under privileged children in South Africa
• Updating Forfar & Arniel’s Medical Reference Books in hospitals and schools World Wide
“These projects are now almost totally self sustaining and autonomous. Our current project is in Sri Lanka was set up in 2004 immediately after the tsunami. We initially came to help rebuild houses which had been destroyed in the tsunami, however after extensive survey work we realised that what was really needed was Community Development and Infrastructure. We shipped ten 20ft containers worth of aid items, collected in Spain and Gibraltar and then purchased initial building materials and land to set up the Hopes and Dreams Village in Tellawatte. Hopes and Dreams Village provides education, physiotherapy and social care to physically challenged adults and children. We also teach vocational skills and provide employment to the local community through our housemaid training courses and handicraft workshop.”
Manacare considers its mission as a handshake of peace and goodwill and a step towards the hope that people from different lands and cultures can work together and, whilst caring about each other, ultimately take a stride towards the achievement of peace on our earth.
